NY Giants Kicker Lawrence Tynes to Serve as Grand Marshall for 10th Annual NYC Tartan Day Parade on April 5, 2008 Lawrence Tynes, kicker for the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants will serve as Grand Marshall for the 10th Annual NY Tartan Day Parade. Tynes will swap his Giants uniform for his kilt as he leads off the Parade, joining more than 1,500 pipers and drummers, clans and societies and all-around Scottish enthusiasts up Sixth Avenue Saturday, April 5, 2008. Tynes, born in Greenock, Scotland, moved to the United States with his family as a ten-year old in 1989. His soccer kicking skills were discovered and leveraged to football as he went on to play for Troy State University. Today, Tynes is the starting kicker for the NFC Champion New York Giants and the only Scottish-born player in the NFL. Commenting on his Scottish roots, Tynes stated, "I owe so much to Scotland," he said. "I'm sure the people were all rooting for me and I'm proud to say I'm the first Scot to ever win the Super Bowl."
Tynes added, "I enthusiastically look forward to participating in the 10th Annual Parade. Having been born in Scotland as well as being a proud American, this parade has special meaning to me and I look forward to sharing a great day with everyone." April 6 was established as Tartan Day by the Congress of the United States to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which is believed by some historians to have been an influence on the American Declaration of Independence. Since 2002, the Clan Currie Society has celebrated Tartan Day with exhibitions and heritage programs at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. 2008 will mark the seventh year that the Clan Currie Society has marched in the NY Tartan Day parade. Clansfolk and friends from near and far are invited to march with the Society. The parade route is on Sixth Avenue,
from West 45th to West 58th Streets.
