Clan Currie Adds Inverness Highland Games to 2006 Schedule Organizers Prepare to Host 40 Scottish Clans at One of the Largest Gatherings in Scotland The Clan Currie Society today announced that they will return to the City of Inverness Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 – 23, 2006. Alan Currie, Clan Convener for Scotland will host the Society’s information booth. In addition to the Inverness gathering, the Society will also return the Bute Highland Games in Scotland this summer on August 16.
For 2006, Inverness stands a very good chance of hosting the biggest Highland Games in Scotland this summer, incorporating the Masters World Championships (MWC), the official international event for heavyweight athletes aged over 40. This is the first time that these Championships have been staged outside of the USA and the Inverness Highland Games is being extended to two days instead of one to accommodate the 72 extra MWC events. A record number of 100 heavy athletes will be descending on Bught Park in the Highland Capital on Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23 to determine which athletes are the best on the International Highland Games Masters circuit. Nine world championships will be contested, with competitors coming from eleven countries. In addition to the field events, there will be two concerts by Blazin' Fiddles, one of Scotland's top traditional music bands and Scotland's biggest clan gathering with up to 40 clans expected in the Tulloch Clan Village. There will also be the City of Inverness pipe band competition, solo piping competition and Highland dancing events. Nine World Championships will be at stake in nine fiercely contested age classes and the Chief Executive of Scottish Masters International, Bill Scrugg, who is based in Colorado, USA, has announced that athletes from 7 countries will compete in Inverness. Councillor
Angus Dick, Chairman of the Inverness Highland Games Committee,
said: “We are absolutely delighted to be the first location
outside of the US to host the prestigious Masters World Championships.
It is believed that this is the biggest field of heavies ever assembled
to compete in Scotland and with the Games lasting for two days instead
of one this year to accommodate 72 extra MWC events, Inverness has
a real chance of staging Scotland’s biggest ever Highland Games
this summer.” World Championship Venue in 2007 Clansfolk from far and wide are cordially invited to rally with the Clan Currie Society at the Inverness Highland Games. For further information, visit their website at www.invernesshighlandgames.com. Tickets for the Games cost £5 for adults and £1 for Concessions per day. About Scottish Highland Games Events were developed to test for strength, stamina, accuracy and agility using the elements and materials of their day-to-day life. The caber toss, stone putt, hammer throw, weight lift, sheaf toss, archery, wrestling, foot races up steep hills and Highland Dancing all combined to tax the endurance and strength of the competitors. While many of the events have become more sophisticated and refined over the centuries, they retain the essence and flavor of the ancient days. About The Clan Currie Society The organization started as a family name society in Glasgow, Scotland in 1959 to further the knowledge and appreciation of the MacMhuirich bardic dynasty. The MacMhuirichs served for over 700 years as professional poets to the Lords of the Isles and later to the MacDonalds of Clanranald. The Red Book of Clanranald, one of Gaelic Scotland’s literary treasures, was penned by successive generations of the MacMhuirich family. Today, the organization is a leading American-based foundation that focuses on celebrating the Scots-Gaelic origins of the Currie name as well as producing outstanding programs and events to honor Scotland’s rich culture and ancestry. The Clan Currie Society plays host to the annual National Tartan Day celebration at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The Society also produces a number of highly successful concerts featuring Scottish music and Gaelic poetry readings. Clan Currie is now venturing into the field of documentary filmmaking with a concentration on Scottish themes. In Scotland, Clan Currie was the Honoured Guest at the 2003 Bute Highland Games and 2001 Blairgowrie Games. Clan Currie has also participated in gatherings in Glenfinnan, Bathgate, Crieff, and the Brodick Highland Games on the Isle of Arran. The Society is currently making plans for their 2007 International Clan Gathering on the Isle of Bute in Scotland. All Photos Courtesy of the
