Learn More Who would have thought that the most coveted prize of participating Scottish Clans and Societies at the Richmond (VA) Highland Games and Celtic Festival involved throwing a pumpkin? What started as a casual fall contest in Georgetown, Delaware twenty years ago has turned into a growing regional sport that today boasts its own World Championship – Punkin Chunkin. The hurling of these icons of the autumn harvest began when a circle of friends known for their anvil tossing skills turned to pumpkins when their backs gave out.
Today, there are more than 50 such events held across the United States. Professional “chunkers” spend countless hours and dollars perfecting their pumpkin launchers – sophisticated cannons that combine air and pressure to fire or “chunk” a pumpkin at incredible speeds and distances. Upwards of 100 teams compete annually at the World Championship, with moneys raised going to benefit charity. For the Richmond gathering, pumpkins are chunked the old fashioned way, by simply throwing a pumpkin. The Clan representative that chunks a pumpkin the furthest wins their Society a free tent space at the following year’s festival.
