“Tartan TV” Has Its Debut on American Television in Select Cities USA Now Joins Canada as “Home” for the Popular Scots Program Tartan TV, a new Scots-themed news and features series, is currently airing on many Public Broadcasting System (PBS) stations covering approximately one third of the United States. The series opener includes a featured segment on Clan Currie’s debut event at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. With access to over 33 million households, Tartan TV describes itself as a “fast-paced, upbeat travel entertainment series on all things Scottish: lochs and castles, celebrities, Celtic music, clans and battles, crafts and customs, food and drink, and golf.” According to Society president Robert Currie, “Amazingly, the Scots are the fifth largest ethnic group in the US – but until now there has never been a series devoted to connecting them with their roots.” Tartan TV is not just for the Scots. Its appeal extends to anyone interested in this eccentric, lovable country and its connections to America and Americans. Researched and produced in Scotland specifically to appeal to U.S. television viewers, Tartan TV takes their audience into the heart of this beautiful, ancient land, and into the soul of its warm and hospitable people. Each half-hour program is structured with five to six magazine-style segments, featuring fascinating facts and information on a major part of America's heritage. Host Fiona Kennedy says: "We've been working very hard for some years now to bring our shows to the North American public, and now we have an excellent chance to reach out to the audience we know is out there."
Tartan TV provides a global showcase for the best of what Scotland has to offer. It is on air every week as a half-hour magazine program on Public Television in the USA and has also been available over the past two years in Canada. Tartan Day in New York The first episode in the series is a classic episode from 2002 shot entirely in New York for National Tartan Day. The program includes a visit to Ellis Island and Clan Currie’s exhibition entitled, “Home and Away: Highland Departures and Returns,” which was produced in cooperation with the National Museums of Scotland. The episode also includes scenes from New York Tartan Day parade featuring over 5000 pipers, and an exclusive interview with Sir Sean Connery. About The Clan Currie Society The Clan Currie Society, an American-based, international, non-profit cultural and educational organization, is active in preserving and promoting highland heritage at Scottish Games, ethnic festivals, as well as community groups and classrooms. The Society has over 2,000 members worldwide that gather via the Society’s website (www.clancurrie.com). The organization started as a family name society in Glasgow, Scotland in 1959 to further the knowledge and appreciation of the MacMhuirich bardic dynasty. The MacMhuirichs (the Gaelic name for Currie) served for over 700 years as professional poets to the Lords of the Isles and later to the MacDonalds of Clanranald. The Red Book of Clanranald, one of Gaelic Scotland’s literary treasures, was penned by successive generations of the MacMhuirich family. Today, the organization is a leading American-based foundation that focuses on celebrating the Scots-Gaelic origins of the Currie name as well as producing outstanding programs and events to honor Scotland’s rich culture and ancestry.
