Clan Currie Set for 10th Annual Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival Society Institutes Annual “Harpist of the Day” Award Clan Currie announced today that they have arranged with the organizers of the Richmond (Virginia) Highland Games and Celtic Festival to create and sponsor the newly-instituted “Harpist of the Day” award at the annual Celtic gathering. According to Society president Robert Currie, “We are honored to be establishing this important award at the Richmond Games. The Scottish harp or clasarch was the traditional instrument of our bardic ancestors and this is a wonderful way to promote the harp and attract new students to the art form.” In addition to hosting the first Clan Currie tent at the games, Robert Currie will be on hand on Sunday, October 23 to present the trophy to it’s first recipient. About the Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival You don’t have to have Celtic heritage in your family tree to attend the Tenth Annual Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival. Just be ready for a good time on a gorgeous autumn weekend, October 23 and 24 at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival is a State Fair of Virginia production.
This year’s events will feature Celtic entertainment on two stages, with continuous live performances from open to close including lead group Hunting McLeod, fiddle and vocal group Trasna, and favorites Charlie Zahm with Tad Marks and Mark Sullivan, and Robin Rich. Stage entertainment also includes dance troupes Rhythm of Ireland, Scottish Country Dancers, and Crossroads Irish Dance Troupe. In the field are fiercely competitive sporting events from rugby to caber toss. The Celtic Harp competition will take place on Sunday, October 23. Additional competitions are scheduled for highland dance and fiddle. Festival guests can research ancestral heritage, shop for unique Christmas gifts, or join in the Parade of Dogs of the British Isles. There’ll be plenty of Cornish pasties, Scotch eggs, and sausage rolls along with Guinness to wash down all of the hoopla. Gates are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets at the gate are $16 per person. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Dogs are welcome for a $4 admission, but must have current rabies tags and a non-retractable leash; one dog per handler.
