The Clan Currie Society announced today that Sir Thomas Harris, Her Majesty's Consul General, NY, will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremonies of Tartan Day Weekend On Ellis Island – A Celebration of Scotland’s Crafts. As Director-General of British Trade & Investment, Sir Thomas has overall responsibility for the promotion of British exports throughout the United States and for securing investment by US firms in the United Kingdom. Opening ceremonies start at 11AM on Friday, April 4. Sir Thomas was appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to be a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1995, and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2002 New Year’s Honours. Joining Harris for the opening ceremonies will be The Hon. Eric Milligan, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and Cynthia Garrett, Acting Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island National Monument. Also appearing at Friday's event will be members of the 84th Pipers bagpipe band from Monmouth County, NJ, fiddler Lisa Gutkin from the popular Celtic band Whirligig, highland dancers Kathryn and Olivia Chrysostom, and piper Jock Nisbet from the Piper's Cove in Kearny, NJ. The Ellis Island event was but one of many Tartan Day events highlighted in a special supplement to yesterday's Sunday New York Times prepared by VisitScotland, Scotland's national tourist board. The brochure included a listing of the key New York-area Tartan Day events including the annual Tunes of Glory pipe parade up Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue on Saturday, April 5.
This is the second year that Clan Currie has joined forces with VisitScotland to host Tartan Day events. The Ellis Island gathering is distinctive in that it is but one of only a few events that are offered to the public free of charge. A complete list of NY-area Tartan Day events can be found on the internet at www.TartanDayNY.com. Across the Hudson in New Jersey, Clan Currie has also joined forces with the Proprietary House Association to host a special Tartan Day flag raising and Scots history lecture at the country's only surviving Colonial Governor's Mansion. The event starts at 10AM on Friday, April 4. For further information contact the Proprietary House at (732) 826-5527. In Washington, DC the National Capital Tartan Day Committee has found it necessary to streamline their annual observance of the new Scots holiday. The Scottish music concert previously announced on this website, along with the highland gathering on the Capital Mall have both been canceled due to security precautions. For a complete list of the Washington-area events that will be held, visit the committee's web site at www.NationalCapital-TartanDay.org. Tartan Day events are by no means exclusive to the East Coast. For a complete list of events being held throughout the country, visit www.tartanday.com.
